The keeping of secrets and the practicing of deception are a commonplace and important part of everyday social interaction. A clear understanding of why and how people deceive and keep secrets in computer-mediated interaction (CMI), and when they choose to reveal intimate aspects of themselves, is central to the design of socially intelligent tools. These issues will be discussed at the Workshop on Secrets and Lies during the ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing.
